When Is IVF required?
There are some conditions where IVF is the only option for having a biological child.
Severe tubal disease: If both the fallopian tubes of the woman are blocked, then also they fall under the category of people who are left with IVF as the only option for a biological child. The fallopian tubes are the connection between your ovaries and your uterus. If the egg can't reach the uterus from the ovaries after ovulation, then the sperm is unable to reach the egg thereby minimizing your chances of becoming pregnant.
In some cases, surgery can be used to repair the fallopian tubes, which can bypass the need for IVF. In such cases, the success rates are a variant. It's not considered a good option if the woman has a severe tubal disease.
Severe male infertility: If the male has infertility, then IUI or IVF with ICSI may be considered. This technique is in contrast to the traditional IVF as it involves the direct injection of the sperms into the egg .In contrast ,the sperms are allowed to fuse with the eggs in a petri dish in basic IVF. The success rates of fertilization are higher with ICSI as there are chances that the sperm might not fertilize the egg in basic IVF.
With IVF-ICSI, only one sperm is required for one egg. IVF-ICSI is necessary when there are severe problems with the sperm motility or morphology (sperm shape) of the male. It can also be used in cases the male partner has a low sperm count.
Azoospermia is a condition in which the male has a zero sperm count. However, such men can have a biological child through IVF-ICSI. It involves the extraction of immature sperm cells directly from the testes. These sperm cells are left to mature in the lab. These are not able to fertilize an egg themselves, that is why they require IVF with ICSI for conception.
Genetic disease: If you and your partner are likely to pass on a genetic disease to your offspring, then IVF may be the best option for you. It particularly applies to couples who experience recurrent miscarriages. If the miscarriages are due to genetic reasons, then the couple will need IVF with PGS or PGD.
PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) is the genetic testing of the embryo for a particular disease. In this test, the embryo is checked for its chromosomal counts. It may help detect some cases but it is not considered fully reliable.
Post-cancer fertility treatment: In this situation again, you will need IVF. This process can make use of your frozen eggs, embryos and ovarian tissues. One can also make use of frozen sperm. These cells can be used in both IUI and IVF. One must opt for IVF if there is only a small amount of preserved sperm cells as its success rate is comparatively higher.
